Swiggy tops the list of India’s Unicorn startup lists and is the largest online food item ordering & delivery chain. Launched in 2014, it is a startup based in Bangalore that has spread to more than 100 cities in India.

Sriharsha Majety

Sriharsha Majety who is the CEO and Co-founder of Swiggy finished his BE degree in Electrical & Electronics and MS Physics from BITS Pilani in 2008.

After that, Sriharsha went ahead to study for the CFA program at the CFA Institute where he finished level II of the program. Later, he enrolled for an MBA in Finance and settled on IIM, Calcutta.

Majety had formerly coordinated recruitment for IIM and also worked with the rates trading desk in London at Nomura International before joining Swiggy.”

In 2013, he cofounded Bundl Technologies Pvt Ltd with Nandan Reddy which was gray before Swiggy.

Lakshmi Nandan Reddy

Swiggy was Co-Founded by Lakshmi Nandan Reddy. He is a BITS Pilani alumnus too, who pursued his M.Sc from the same college in 2010.

For about two years, Reddy held the position of operations head for social media at SourcePilani, which was the first BPO catering exclusively to rural India.

He was instrumental and inaugurated a partnership with Zurna Restaurant by founding it before co-founding Bundl and ultimately becoming Swiggy.

Rahul Jaimini

Rahul Jaimini is a former Senior Engineer at Myntra who has partnered with Majety and Nandan to help in building the Swiggy app.

In 2010, Rahul did a Joint project that awarded him degrees in Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.

Moreover, companies such as Philips Research and Netapp benefitted from his services at some point. Jaimini’s departure from the organization occurred in May 2020 when he Co-Founded Pesto Tech.

According to LinkedIn, Swiggy employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people.

An entrepreneur’s story of how Swiggy got started

Swiggy did not originate as a food distribution enterprise. Hard to believe, right? But it is what it is.

In 2013 it took Sriharsha more than six months to cycle across Europe, with a business idea.

In 2011, Sriharsha and Nandan co-founded a company that was meant to empower courier services across the country as well as act as a logistics solution. They named it Bundl Technologies Private Limited. 

Despite this, Bundl never realized success forcing the founders to close down in 2014.

As a result of his failure, Majety began researching and discovered a lot of potential in the food industry.

This made Swiggy, an online food delivery company, come into existence. Then in August of the year 2014, with software developed by one named Rahul Jaimini, the Company was created.

At the time Swiggy was launched, area of apps like Foodpanda, TinyOwl, and Ola Cafe were engaged in delivering food. Ola Cabs and Zomato acquired Foodpanda and Tinyowl, and Ola Cafe couldn’t survive and was closed after competing for just one year.

All of these enterprises experienced difficulties whereas by 2014 there were only six delivery men working for Swiggy from twenty-five dine-ins up until February 2015 when this number had gone up tremendously because, after one year of operations alone spanning from March to May of the following year, more than a million requests were made every 30 days.

Taking Swiggy forward – future plans

Swiggy was officially made a public company on 8th April 2024. A resolution has been adopted by the board of directors of the company, thus updating its status with the Registrar of Companies.

This update is a significant step towards the company’s planned IPO in the last half of this year. In line with the transformation, Swiggy Private Limited has been changed to Swiggy Limited, reflecting that its series of going public.

Swiggy hopes, after reaching this milestone, to leverage its new prominence in the public eye and begin growing and expanding fully realizing the huge potential of public markets.
